Originally called ‘Prayag’ and counted among the major cities of India, Allahabad, called ‘Ilahabad’ (named by Mughal Emperor Akbar and called so before the British rule), which has the headquarters of the Allahabad district and division of the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is one of most visited pilgrimage destinations of India. 2. Allahabad Fort

Erected in 232 B.C. by the Emperor Ashoka the Great and renovated in 1583 A.D. by the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, and recognized by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national significance, the Allahabad Fort, which is located on the bank of the holy river Yamuna close to its Sangam in Allahabad, is counted among the largest forts in India. Inside of this ancient fort, you can explore a polished sandstone pillar of Ashoka the Great. The tourist attractions in this fort are the Palace of Mariam uz Zamani (Jodha Bai), the Zenana, the Patal Puri Temple with the Akshaya Vat, the Saraswati Koop, etc. Most of this fort is now governed by the Indian Army. 3. Anand Bhavan

Constructed by the Nehrus near the Old Anand Bhavan, the Anand Bhavan, which was converted into a historic house museum in 1971 A.D, is a must visit in the Allahabad city. 4. Jawahar Planetarium

Jawahar Planetarium

Situated at the campus of New Anand Bhavan in the city of Allahabad beside the New Anand Bhavan (the previous residence of the family of the Nehrus-Gandhis, and now converted into a museum), the Jawahar Planetarium, which was constructed in 1979 A.D., is the perfect spot for children and students. This planetarium is a must visit for those who visit the Anand Bhavan. A sky show on popular astronomy is also held in the sky theater of this planetarium.

5. Swaraj Bhawan (Old Anand Bhavan)

Having been a real ancestral property of the family of the Nehrus-Gandhis, the Swaraj Bhavan, previously the ‘OId Anand Bhavan’, which was donated by Motilal Nehru to the Indian National Congress in 1930 A.D., is a large mansion situated close to the Saraswati Ghat in the Allahabad City. In this mansion, you can watch a light and sound show. Every day, this mansion holds four shows.

6. Khusro Bagh

Khusro Bagh

Being a tremendous walled garden and burial complex situated at Muhalla Khuldabad near the Allahabad Junction Railway Station in the city of Allahabad, the Khusro Bagh, which is located at a distance of approx 2 miles from the Allahabad Fort, and stretched over the area of 40 acres in the shape of a quadrangle, owns the total three sandstone tombs of Shah Begum, the Rajput wife of Jahangir and the mother of Khusrau Mirza; Khusrau Mirza, the eldest son of Jahangir; and Nithar Begum, the sister of Khusro Mirza and the daughter of Jahangir. Made in the memory of Khusro, the eldest son of Jahangir, this historical garden, which shows a fine example of the architectural style of the Mughals, has been declared as an Indian Site of National Significance. This site is also popular for mango trees.

7. Alfred Park

Alfred Park

Being the largest in Allahabad with its area of 133 acres, and constructed in 1870 A.D. to symbolize the visit of Prince Alfred to the city, the Alfred Park or the Company Garden, after the independence of India renamed the ‘Chandra Shekhar Azad Park’ because of being the martyrdom site of Chandra Shekhar Azad, the freedom fighter of India, is a public park in this city. This historical park, which remains open between 04:00 a.m. and 08:00 p.m. daily, and receives around 5,000 people in its opening duration, is home to the recreational and significant heritage sites, namely the Chandra Shekhar Azad Memorial, the Thornhill Mayne Memorial, or Allahabad Public Library, the Allahabad Museum, the Madan Mohan Malviya Stadium, the Victoria Memorial, and the Prayag Sangeet Samiti, a music training institute. This public park is a must visit place in Allahabad.

9. Thornhill Mayne Memorial (Allahabad Public Library)

Formerly built by the British in the style of the Gothic architecture, and converted into the Allahabad Public Library in 1879 A.D., the Thornhill Mayne Memorial, which is located in the Alfred Park of Allahabad, is counted among the must visit tourist attractions in this magnificent city. The construction of the building of this memorial was finalized in 1870 A.D. Being the largest library in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with its large collection of approx 1,25,000 books, the Allahabad Public Library, also called the Government Public Library, which was founded in 1864 A.D., is the oldest public library in India. The building of this Library is very beautiful, so you must view it at least once in your life.
